Though he was considered the greatest French writer of his day, Hugo was forced to flee the country because of his opposition to Napoleon III. The Tao is usually translated as the way or the path, but it is better understood as a universal life force that flows around and through all things. At the storys center stands the intellectual and idealistic Dorothea Brooke-a character who in many ways resembles Eliot herself. But the very qualities that set Dorothea apart from the materialistic, mean-spirited society around her also lead her into a disastrous marriage with a man she mistakes for her soul mate. In a parallel story, young doctor Tertius Lydgate, who is equally idealistic, falls in love with the pretty but vain and superficial Rosamund Vincy, whom he marries to his ruin. &&LP&&REliot surrounds her main figures with a gallery of characters drawn from every social class, from laborers and shopkeepers to the rising middle class to members of the wealthy, landed gentry. Together they form an extraordinarily rich and precisely detailed portrait of English provincial life in the 1830s. But Dorotheas and Lydgates struggles to retain their moral integrity in the midst of temptation and tragedy remind us that their world is very much like our own. Hardcover. Etat : Good. From the very beginning of his writing career, John le Carré proved himself to be a master of the espionage novel. His ability to depict the working world of the spy came, in part, from his years of foreign service and intelligence experience. His was not the fantasy world of the witty, dashing super-agent; it was the grimy, unglamorous, morally ambiguous world of information-gathering, aided by doubledealing and treachery.

In his first two novels, Call for the Dead (1961) and A Murder of Quality (1962), le Carré introduces and establishes his legendary secret agent, George Smiley. It is Smileys people and milieu that, in book after bestselling book, provided the soil out of which the modern espionage novel grew and flourished. However, it was his third novel, The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1963), that put le Carré on the literary map. Temporarily leaving George Smiley aside, le Carré created the disillusioned agent Alec Leamas, and placed him squarely in the middle of Cold War Berlin. Questions of honor, trust, truth, and the meaning of enemy and friend, all come into deadly play in this complex tale of convenient lies, twisted loyalties, and personal betrayal.

The three novels included in this volume have introductions by the author and forewords by some of the most eminent names in suspense fiction: P. D. James, Otto Penzler, and Joseph Kanon.

One of the most haunting stories ever written, Joseph Conrads Heart of Darkness follows Marlow, a riverboat captain, on a voyage into the African Congo at the height of European colonialism. Astounded by the brutal depravity he witnesses, Marlow becomes obsessed with meeting Kurtz, a famously idealistic and able man stationed farther along the river. What he finally discovers, however, is a horror beyond imagining. Heart of Darkness is widely regarded as a masterpiece for its vivid study of human nature and the greed and ruthlessness of imperialism. This collection also includes three of Conrads finest short stories: Youth, the authors largely autobiographical tale of a young mans ill-fated sea voyage, in which Marlow makes his first appearance, The Secret Sharer, and Amy Forster. Features a map of the Congo Free State.A. Michael Matin is a professor in the English Department of Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. Softcover. Etat : Good. Marco Polo was the most famous traveller of his time. His voyages began in 1271 with a visit to China, after which he served the Kubilai Khan on numerous diplomatic missions. On his return to the West, he was made a prisoner of war and met Rustichello of Pisa, with whom he collaborated on this book. The accounts of his travels provide a fascinating glimpse of the different societies he encountered: their religions, customs, ceremonies and way of life; on the spices and silks of the East; on precious gems, exotic vegetation and wild beasts. He tells the story of the holy shoemaker, the wicked caliph and the three kings, among a great many others, evoking a remote and long-vanished world with colour and immediacy.

Hardcover. Etat : Good. First Edition. From Booklist
The successor to Barth and Alan Siegel's eye-popping One Man's Eye (2000) is also concerned with a particular person's vision, this time not photo collector Siegel's but that of a professional banquet photographer with a sideline in circus publicity. Edward J. Kelty's circus pictures, taken from the mid-1920s to the 1940s, consist of group portraits of clowns, sideshow attractions, bands, elephants, menageries, aerialists, equestrians, tractor and train crews, candy butchers (seen with their backs turned to show the "Baby Ruth Candy" logo on their smocks), and even everybody in the Ringling-Barnum cookhouse tent on July 4, 1935. He also lensed stars such as lion-tamer Clyde Beatty, teenage tightrope walker Harold Barnes, and Hugo Zacchini, Human Projectile (posed atop his cannon), and interior and exterior panoramas of circuses pitched in Tarrytown, Terre Haute, and other fair burghs. Kelty used a specially made "banquet" camera that produced 12-by-20-inch images. Reproduced here at about two-fifths that size and as originally tinted (sepia or cyan) when appropriate, they are scrumptious, sometimes outrageous (see "Cheerful Gardner," who worked with elephants--sheesh!) eye-candy.
