Born into the first family of Indian Politics-the Nehrus- Nayantara Sahgal saw at first hand Indias emergence as an independant nation. She has published 17 books and has won the following award; Commonwealth writers prize (1986) Sinclair fiction Prize (1985) Sahitya Akademi award (1986) She has also served on the juries for such awards since then and in 1990 was elected Fellow of the American Academy of arts and sciences. In 1997 she was awarded an honorary doctorate for literature by the University of Leeds.

Mistaken Identity is the story of Bhushan Singh, the aimless son of a minor Raja, who has been arraigned for sedition and locked away in a jail where he endlessly awaits his trial. It is a complex work that is at once a family saga, a romance and a richly shaded historical novel.
