Description du livre Etat : Sehr gut. 218 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Small tears in and small staining on jacket, otherwise very good and clean. / Kleine Risse in und kleine Anschmutzung auf Umschlag, sonst sehr gut und sauber. - The age of Nero produced a comparatively larger body of literature than any other era in Roman history except the age of Augustus. Seneca, Lucan, Persius, Petronius, the Greek epigrammatists Lucillius and Nicarchus, Calpurnius Siculus, the Elder Pliny, Martial, and Columella were all part of the literary renaissance that took place during the fourteen years from the accession of Nero in a.d. 54 until his death in a.d. 68. J. P. Sullivan here studies the interaction of literature, patronage, and political power in Nero's reign, and he explores the methods and techniquesparody, satire, flattery, innuendo, diatribethat writers used to further their own careers and ambitions or to advance political causes. He discusses the roles played by imperial ideology and propaganda, intimidation, and official harassment in the literary life of Nero's court, as well as the elements of Nero's character that helped to shape the literature of his day. Sullivan seeks to cast doubt on current theories of the autonomy of art by rooting the classics of the period firmly in their historical context. He offers a coherent picture of Neronian literature that has interesting implications for the dating and authorship of some problematic works, such as the pseudo-Senecan Octavia. Treating Seneca, Lucan, and Persius as intelligent literary artists, Sullivan puts the reign of Nero in a new and more sympathetic light. - J. P. Sullivan is Professor of Classics, University of California, Santa Barbara. He has taught at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the University of Texas, Austin, the State University of New York, Buffalo, and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
