John McPhee has published more than thirty books and much of his work first appeared in the pages of The New Yorker, where he has been a staff writer since 1963. He is a four-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, winning in 1999 for Annals of the Former World. McPhee teach¬es non-fiction writing at Princeton University.
Richard Mabey is a naturalist and award-winning author and journalist. He is the author of His works include The Cabaret of Plants, Nature Cure, and Flora Britannica. He is an active member of national and local conservation groups and lives in Norfolk.

McPhee writes about the botany, history, and industry of oranges. First spoken of in 500 B.C. and atrributed to Confucius, oranges developed in Southeast Asia, subsequently spreading throughout the world with a timing closely parallel to the spread of Western civilization. It was Columbus himself who brought the first orange seeds to the New Yorld. Botanically, oranges are spectuacularly complicated. McPhee's astonishing book has an almost narrative progression, is immensely readable, and is frequently amusing. The book, in a sense, is a tapestry of oranges, too: Louis XIV hung tapestries of oranges in the halls of Versailles because oranges and orange trees werre the symbols of his nature and his reign; in the modern Caribbean, people split oranges and clean floors with them, one half in each hand.
