Melvyn Bragg met Laurence Olivier hoping to make a full-length television profile of him. Olivier was old and ill. Together, in silence, they watched clips of his great roles. At the end, eyes red with weeping, he turned: 'OK, old boy,' he said. 'Let's give it a go.'
For the next year and a half Melvyn Bragg took notes, saw films, archive footage, out-takes. He talked to John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Peggy Ashcroft and dozens more, especially Joan Plowright (Lady Olivier). But above all he talked with the man himself.
In this magnificent portrait, Melvyn Bragg's observant eye and writer's imagination are brought to bear on the art and mind of the greatest actor of our times.
Melvyn Bragg is a writer and broadcaster. His novels include The Hired Man, for which he won the Time/Life Silver Pen Award, Without a City Wall, winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize, The Soldier's Return, winner of the WHSmith Literary Award, A Son of War and Crossing the Lines, both of which were longlisted for the Man Booker Prize, A Place in England, which was longlisted for the Lost Man Booker Prize, and most recently Grace and Mary. He has also written several works of non-fiction, including The Book of Books about the King James Bible. He lives in London and Cumbria.
